Early Life

Before captivating the global music scene with their futuristic concept and genre-defying sound, the members of aespa underwent a rigorous and carefully crafted pre-debut journey under SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s most prominent entertainment agencies.

Ningning, born in Harbin, China, was the earliest to be introduced to the public. She joined the agency’s renowned pre-debut training program SM Rookies on September 19, 2016, at the age of 14. Through SM Rookies, she gained early exposure by appearing on the show My SMT in the “Rookies Princess: Who’s the Best?” segment and contributed vocals to the Korean animated TV program Shining Star in 2017, showcasing her vocal abilities to domestic and international audiences.

Karina, a South Korean native, made her first notable public appearance in February 2019, featuring in the music video for Taemin’s single WANT. She also performed live alongside him on various music shows, impressing viewers with her stage presence and charisma. Her presence was later seen again in SM’s futuristic virtual showcase Beyond DRIVE, where she appeared alongside EXO’s Kai in a collaborative project with Hyundai promoting the Tucson SUV an early sign of her involvement with high-concept digital performances.

Hints of aespa’s impending debut began to surface as early as September 25, 2020, when a mysterious logo appeared at the end of SuperM’s One (Monster & Infinity) music video. Fans speculated about a new girl group, and excitement mounted in the K-pop community.

On October 26, 2020, SM Entertainment officially announced the debut of a new girl group its first since Red Velvet in 2014, and the first overall idol group since NCT in 2016. The following days saw the unveiling of aespa’s members in quick succession: Winter was introduced on October 27, followed by Karina, Ningning, and finally Giselle, a Japanese-Korean trainee whose addition sparked international curiosity due to her unique background and rapid ascent within SM’s system.

With each member reveal came digital content that laid the groundwork for aespa’s elaborate metaverse-centered storyline. On October 28, a teaser video from the « MY » series featuring Karina confirmed that each member would be accompanied by a virtual alter ego referred to as « æ » avatars blending the boundaries between reality and digital identity. By October 31, the group’s first official group photos were released, solidifying their image as a cutting-edge act with a distinct visual identity.

The momentum continued with the release of SYNK, a cinematic video on November 2 that introduced all four members and previewed aespa’s concept: a fusion of real and virtual worlds set within the SM Culture Universe (SMCU). This narrative places aespa in a unique digital realm known as FLAT, where they are connected to their æ-counterparts through a synchronization process known as SYNK and travel between realities via REKALL portals core elements that shaped their musical identity and thematic storytelling.

In the weeks leading up to their debut, SM rolled out a series of teasers showcasing individual members and their avatars Winter (Nov 4), Giselle (Nov 6), Ningning (Nov 8), and Karina (Nov 11) building anticipation and immersing fans in aespa’s narrative world. On November 12, the group broke new ground by releasing exclusive voice messages on Spotify, including Winter’s vocal reveal, marking one of the first pre-debut interactions of its kind. The group launched their official TikTok account on November 15, rapidly gaining followers and viral traction.

On November 17, 2020, aespa officially debuted with their digital single “Black Mamba”, accompanied by a high-budget, visually striking music video. The video amassed over 21.4 million views in its first 24 hours, setting a new record for the most-watched debut music video by a K-pop group a strong indication of their explosive arrival on the scene. The single itself became the foundation of aespa’s lore, introducing the main antagonist of their storyline and solidifying the SMP (SM Performance) sound: intense synths, powerful choreography, and a cinematic ambiance.

aespa performed their debut stage on KBS2’s Music Bank on November 20, and by January 17, 2021, they secured their first music show win on SBS’s Inkigayo, a significant milestone that many rookie groups take months or years to achieve.

Despite initial skepticism surrounding their metaverse concept and rumors that circulated online during their debut period, aespa quickly proved their staying power with their bold concept, strong performances, and undeniable talent. As the first group to fully integrate avatars, AI, and digital storytelling into their identity, aespa stood not only as a girl group, but as pioneers of a new era in K-pop one where the virtual and real coexist in harmony.

Career Path

Following their explosive debut in late 2020, aespa rapidly rose to prominence, setting the tone for a new generation of K-pop defined by technological innovation, transmedia storytelling, and global ambition.
2021: Musical Growth and Breakthrough Success

aespa’s post-debut momentum continued into 2021, beginning with the release of Forever on February 5 a sentimental remake of Yoo Young-jin’s 2000 winter ballad. Characterized by gentle acoustic guitar and heartfelt lyrics, the track marked a softer, more emotional side of the group, contrasting the intensity of Black Mamba.

On May 17, aespa released their third single, Next Level, a genre-bending remake inspired by the Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw soundtrack. Infused with dynamic rhythm shifts, fierce rap verses, and a bold hip-hop energy, the track became a cultural phenomenon. It peaked at #2 on both the Gaon Digital Chart and the Billboard K-pop Hot 100, establishing aespa as one of the most powerful rookies in Korean music history. The song also climbed to #3 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

aespa’s rising international profile was further cemented on July 22, when they signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the leading talent agencies in the United States, signaling their ambitions for global expansion.

On October 5, aespa released their first mini album, Savage, a six-track EP anchored by the explosive title track of the same name. Lauded for its complex production and infectious hooks, Savage was critically acclaimed and featured in several year-end best-of lists, including NME and Time Magazine. The song achieved a Perfect All-Kill on Korean streaming platforms a rare feat making aespa the first fourth-generation group to do so. Commercially, the EP topped the Gaon Album Chart and debuted at #20 on the Billboard 200, the highest ranking ever for a K-pop girl group debut album at the time. With over 780,000 units sold, Savage became SM Entertainment’s best-selling debut album until 2023.

By the end of 2021, aespa had earned two Daesangs (grand prizes): Stage of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards and Record of the Year at the Melon Music Awards, becoming the fastest girl group to reach such accolades.
2022: Global Expansion and Million-Seller Status

aespa’s international reach expanded dramatically in 2022. On April 23, they performed at Coachella, becoming the third K-pop girl group to appear at the festival and the first of their generation to grace its main stage. Their set included fan favorites and a surprise performance of the then-unreleased English track Life’s Too Short.

In May, Time Magazine named aespa among its Next Generation Leaders, highlighting their pioneering blend of music and virtual identity. They also made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia list, underscoring their industry impact just 18 months after debut.

On July 8, aespa returned with their second EP, Girls. The album included nine tracks among them Black Mamba, Forever, and Dreams Come True, a successful 2021 remake of S.E.S.’s iconic hit. The pre-released tracks Illusion and the English version of Life’s Too Short set the stage for the EP’s massive success. Girls surpassed 1.6 million pre-orders, becoming the first K-pop girl group album to sell over one million copies in a single week. It debuted at #1 on the Circle Album Chart and reached #3 on the Billboard 200, solidifying aespa’s global presence.

July also saw the group make impactful public appearances: a speech and performance at the UN High-level Political Forum on sustainable development, and a live stage at Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series in New York. In October, aespa held a virtual concert on Roblox in partnership with Crocs, drawing 2.5 million attendees.

December brought a festive collaboration with Red Velvet on Beautiful Christmas, and aespa launched their first reality show, Synk Road, offering fans a closer look at their off-stage personalities.
2023: World Tour and Commercial Dominance

In early 2023, aespa embarked on their first concert tour, Synk: Hyper Line, beginning with two sold-out nights at Seoul’s Jamsil Arena. The tour extended to Japan, with 10 sold-out shows and 110,000 attendees, culminating in their historic two-day concert at the Tokyo Dome—making aespa the first fourth-generation K-pop act to headline the iconic venue.

On March 31, aespa released Hold on Tight for the Apple Original Film Tetris, blending techno elements with the nostalgic Tetris theme. This was followed by their third EP, My World, released on May 8. With over 2 million sales in just two weeks, the album was certified Double Million, marking another commercial high point. It debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200, their second top 10 entry.

aespa’s global tour continued across Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe, with performances in Los Angeles, Jakarta, Paris, New York, and more. They made appearances at prestigious events including the Cannes Film Festival, where they represented luxury brand Chopard, and became the first K-pop act to perform at the Governors Ball in New York.

On August 18, they released Better Things, a bright English-language single, supported by a comedic mini-sitcom series. Later that month, they released We Go, the theme song for the Korean Pokémon anime. In October, they returned with Zoom Zoom, the ending theme for Beyblade X.

Their fourth EP, Drama, released on November 10, brought them back to their SMP roots while continuing the narrative expansion of their universe.
2024–2025: Artistic Maturity and Multiverse Expansion

In 2024, aespa launched their second world tour, Synk: Parallel Line, and prepared for their most ambitious release yet. On May 27, they dropped their first full-length studio album, Armageddon, led by the double title tracks Supernova and Armageddon. Supernova earned a Perfect All-Kill, topped the Circle Digital Chart for 11 consecutive weeks, and became their first top 10 hit on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart.

In July, aespa made their official Japanese debut with Hot Mess and surprised fans with four solo tracks, one per member, performed during their Seoul concerts. Karina’s solo, Up, made history by winning a solo music show award on Show! Music Core, despite her not officially debuting as a soloist.

On October 21, aespa released their fifth EP, Whiplash, which became their first top 10 hit on the Billboard Global 200. The group capped off the year with multiple major awards, including Artist of the Year at the TikTok Awards Korea.

In June 2025, aespa continued their release streak with the single album Dirty Work, followed by the announcement of their sixth EP, Rich Man, slated for release on September 5, 2025.

Later that year, aespa signed endorsement deals with a wide range of brands including Korean cosmetics company Clio, skincare label Mediheal, French sportswear brand Eider, and South Korean financial giant KB Kookmin Bank. In November, they were selected as the official muse for Italian fragrance house Acqua di Parma, and entered the world of gaming through a collaboration with the mobile RPG Eternal Return.

A future collaboration with the fighting game Street Fighter 6 was also announced, further affirming aespa’s prominent role in digital and gaming culture.

Beyond their commercial ventures, aespa has also taken on philanthropic initiatives. On February 1, 2025, during their Synk: Parallel Line concert in Los Angeles, the group announced that a portion of the proceeds from the show would be donated to support victims of the devastating local wildfires. This gesture reinforced aespa’s growing commitment to using their platform for social impact.
